Ginologist, Johannesburg, South Africa

Founded in 2019 by the mysterious Ginologist, this Johannesburg distillery takes a very scientific approach to distilling.  Gin and the usage of botanicals and how they react during distillation is still a bit of mystery.  However, through a scientific based approach the Ginologist has been able to identify new botanicals that can create new flavours within the gin.

Botanicals are distilled at different levels, some botanicals are best distilled through vacuum distilling, some work better extracts, some within the traditional basket that a London Dry Gin uses and sometimes simply put into the still itself.  The Orient gin from Ginologist encapsulates this range with botanicals being added throughout the distillation and even being infused into the water before the distillation begins.

The Orient Gin started life as Spice Gin, but many of the botanicals are from Asia so it only seemed right to allow the expression to showcase where it was really from.  This is one of the few gins that does not use citrus, so complex flavours from botanicals such as grains of paradise and cardamom can be enjoyed.  That's not to say a slice of lime as a garnish should be avoided.

This month we got our friends at To Be Frank to design a Ginsanity x TBF Negroni - check out their bar in Kennedy Town to try more of the cocktails.  Capi & Fevertree Elderflower make up the box.
